Over-mulching is one of the most common causes of preventable tree decline in residential yards across Duluth, Lawrenceville, Snellville, and the North Atlanta suburbs. Mulch piled high against the trunk creates conditions that promote fungal rot at the base of the tree, encourage girdling root development below grade, and provide a protected environment for insects and disease pathogens to establish at the most vulnerable point of the tree.
The correct application is two to four inches of mulch that begins several inches away from the trunk and extends outward toward the drip line. The trunk base and root flare should be visible. This approach retains the moisture and temperature benefits of mulch while avoiding the damage that comes from burying the trunk base.
If your trees have accumulated heavy mulch over multiple seasons, pulling it back from the trunk is a simple correction that can make a meaningful difference in long-term tree health. ATL Tree Work's certified arborists can assess trees showing signs of stress and identify whether over-mulching is a contributing factor.
