Canopy Thinning Ahead of Storm Season for Central Alabama Shade Trees

Post Copy

Central Alabama's mid-summer storms bring fast-moving thunderstorms and strong wind gusts, and a dense, overgrown canopy catches far more of that wind than a properly thinned one. Selective thinning removes interior branches so wind passes through the crown instead of loading against it.

This is different from topping. A thinned canopy still provides full shade and keeps its natural shape, but carries less structural stress during a summer storm. Trees that have not been pruned in several years are the best candidates.

ACE Tree Service's ISA Certified Arborists evaluate crown density for homeowners across Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia, and Trussville to determine how much thinning a specific tree needs before the next storm arrives.
