Most falls at home don't happen because of a dramatic accident. They happen because of a loose bath mat, a dim hallway, a pair of slippers with worn-out tread, or a cord stretched across a walking path. Small, everyday details add up to real risk over time, especially for anyone whose balance or strength has changed even slightly.
A few practical fixes make a meaningful difference: grab bars near the tub and toilet, nightlights in hallways and bathrooms, clearing walkways of loose rugs and clutter, and swapping out worn footwear for shoes with real grip. None of these require a major renovation, just a walk-through of the home with a clear eye for hazards.
Having a second set of eyes in the home regularly, someone who notices a frayed rug edge or a burnt-out hallway light before it causes a problem, is one of the quieter benefits of consistent in-home support.
Have you done a fall-risk walk-through of a parent or loved one's home recently? What did you find?
