Warning Signs of a Failing Tree: What Northern Colorado Homeowners Should Know

Post Copy

Trees rarely fail without warning. The signals are usually there weeks or months before a branch drops or a trunk splits. Here are the most common signs a tree on your Northern Colorado property may need attention.

Dead branches concentrated at the top of the canopy ("dieback") are one of the earliest signs of a tree in decline. Fungi growing from the base or trunk indicate internal decay that doesn't always show on the surface. Cracks in the main trunk, especially vertical splits, are structural red flags. Heaving soil at the roots, visible root decay, or a lean that has developed over time all warrant a professional evaluation.

Wind, drought, and soil compaction, all common in Northern Colorado, accelerate these problems in trees that might otherwise be stable for years.

If you're unsure about a tree on your Windsor, Fort Collins, Loveland, or Greeley property, an ISA Certified Arborist assessment is the right first step. ArborCo Tree Care offers free estimates and can walk you through what we're seeing and your realistic options.

Image / Media Suggestion

Authentic job photo preferred: a tree showing visible warning signs (fungal growth at base, trunk crack, significant dieback at crown), or a before/after of a hazardous tree that was safely removed. Real documentation of actual tree problems is far more compelling than stock imagery.
