Mid-summer is peak season for several insect pests that target ornamental trees and shrubs across Halifax Regional Municipality. Aphids and soft scale insects are among the most common — and both can go unnoticed until populations are large enough to cause visible damage.
Aphids cluster on new growth and undersides of leaves, secreting a sticky substance called honeydew that encourages sooty mold. On maples, birches, and ornamental shrubs, heavy infestations cause leaf curl, yellowing, and stunted growth. Scale insects attach to bark and branches, drawing plant sap and leaving yellowed or dropping leaves as the primary visible symptom.
Neither pest requires a crisis response in most cases, but both benefit from early identification. Treatment options range from targeted pesticide applications to horticultural oil treatments and systemic soil injections, depending on the pest, tree species, and severity.

Authentic job photo preferred: close-up of aphid or scale damage on a Nova Scotia tree or shrub, or a crew member performing a plant health inspection on an HRM property. Macro pest documentation photos are very effective for educational posts like this one.
