Newly planted trees across the Treasure Valley are at their most vulnerable during the first one to two summers after planting. The root system is not yet established enough to pull adequate moisture from surrounding soil during the hot, dry stretch of July and August without supplemental watering.
The most effective watering approach is deep and infrequent rather than shallow and frequent. Surface watering encourages shallow root development and rarely penetrates to the depth where it matters. A deep, slow application two to three times per week, targeting the root ball rather than the canopy, delivers moisture where the tree can actually use it. Soaker hoses and tree watering bags are practical tools for maintaining consistent deep watering through a full Treasure Valley summer.
ArborSafe Professional Tree Management provides guidance on newly planted tree care as part of every planting and transplanting project we complete. If you have trees planted this spring that you're trying to establish through summer, we're glad to answer questions about your specific situation.
