Bark beetles target pines already weakened by drought, heat, or root damage rather than attacking healthy trees at random. Once beetles bore into the bark, they introduce fungi that block water movement, and by the time needles turn reddish-brown, the infestation is usually well established.
Small resin tubes on the trunk, called pitch tubes, are often the first visible sign, appearing before any needle discoloration. Catching an infestation at this stage gives the best chance of protecting nearby healthy pines.
ArborSafe Professional Tree Management inspects and treats bark beetle activity for property owners across Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, and Boise, and recommends consistent summer watering to reduce a pine's vulnerability from the start.
