Lethal bronzing is a fast-moving palm disease confirmed across parts of Florida, including Sarasota County, and it can weaken an otherwise healthy palm within months of the first symptoms.
Early signs include premature fruit drop, followed by discoloration starting in the oldest, lowest fronds and working upward through the canopy toward the newest growth at the top. Once the spear leaf, the newest unopened frond, is affected, the outlook for that palm becomes very poor.
The disease spreads through a small insect called a planthopper, which means nearby healthy palms are also at risk once an infected tree is identified close by. Prompt attention to confirmed cases helps protect the palms around it.
If a palm on your property has started browning from the bottom up, it is worth having it checked before the condition progresses further.
