Oak trees across Montgomery and Chester counties are entering the period of peak summer stress, and several disease and insect threats are worth knowing about if you have oaks on your property.
Oak wilt remains the most serious systemic threat, spreading through root grafts between neighboring trees and through bark beetles that carry fungal spores from infected wood. In the Philadelphia suburbs, where mature red oaks and pin oaks are common in established neighborhoods, a single infected tree can quietly transmit the disease through a shared root system before any visible decline appears above ground. Early detection is critical, because there is no effective treatment once wilt has progressed through a large portion of the vascular system.
Gypsy moth and spongy moth pressure has also elevated in parts of Tri-County PA in recent years, with defoliation in some oak stands severe enough to cause multi-season decline. Trees that experience repeated defoliation are significantly more vulnerable to secondary infection and structural failure.
A Board Certified Master Arborist assessment can distinguish between oak wilt, insect defoliation, environmental stress, and other causes of decline, which determines the right response. BG Tree Care provides free estimates for residential properties throughout Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware counties.

Authentic job photo preferred: a large oak in a Tri-County PA residential yard showing canopy work in progress, or a close-up of a treated or assessed oak with healthy canopy. Avoid stock images of diseased trees, which can read as alarmist.
