A damaged or declining tree does not always need to come down, but knowing the difference between a tree that can recover and one that is a lost cause takes a trained eye.
Factors like how much of the root system is intact, whether the main trunk is compromised, and how much of the canopy is still healthy all play into that decision. A tree that lost a large limb in a storm might be perfectly salvageable with the right pruning. Age and species also matter here, since some trees recover from damage far better than others depending on how they naturally heal.
On the other hand, a tree with significant trunk decay, a split trunk, or root damage from construction or flooding is often better removed before it becomes a liability near a home or driveway.
