Not every tree that looks a little rough is actually dangerous, and not every healthy-looking tree is as safe as it appears. Knowing the difference matters more than most homeowners realize.
Hazard signs to watch for include a noticeable lean that developed suddenly, mushroom-like growths at the base of the trunk, large dead branches in the upper canopy, and cracks running through the main trunk. Any one of these is worth a closer look. Timing also matters, since some of these signs are easiest to spot right after a storm, when stressed limbs reveal themselves first.
On the other hand, some trees that look thin or bare during certain seasons are perfectly healthy once you know what is normal for that species. That is where an experienced eye makes the difference between unnecessary removal and real risk.
