Drought Stress in Atlanta Hardwoods: What to Watch for on Your Property This Summer

Post Copy

Atlanta summers push hardwood trees, including oaks, maples, dogwoods, and sweetgums, toward drought stress when dry stretches extend over several weeks. Early signs include dull or off-color foliage, leaf margin scorch, and premature leaf drop well before fall. By the time canopy thinning is visible from the street, the root system has often been under significant pressure for some time.

Drought-stressed trees are more vulnerable to secondary problems. Insects that healthy trees would resist find easier entry points in compromised tissue, and certain fungal pathogens become more active in trees with reduced vascular function. A professional assessment during summer identifies the stress level and determines whether targeted intervention, soil aeration, deep-root watering guidance, or plant health care treatment, is warranted before conditions worsen.
