What a Plant Health Care Program Actually Includes and Why Timing Treatments Around the Season Matters

Post Copy

Plant health care, or PHC, is one of those terms that gets used broadly in arboriculture without much explanation of what it actually involves. For Boutte Tree, a PHC program is a structured approach to maintaining and improving tree health over time, built around scheduled monitoring, diagnosis, and targeted treatment, rather than reacting to problems after they're visible.

A PHC assessment starts with a professional evaluation of each tree's current condition, which includes examining the canopy, trunk, root flare, and surrounding soil. From there, treatments are selected based on what the tree actually needs, not a standard package. Deep-root fertilization supports trees with nutrient deficiencies or compacted root zones. Soil aeration improves water and oxygen movement in Atlanta's heavy clay soils. Fungicide and insecticide applications are targeted to specific identified threats, not applied speculatively.

Timing matters considerably in PHC work. Certain treatments are most effective when applied during specific windows, such as systemic insecticides applied before peak beetle activity, or fertilization timed to support root activity rather than force flush growth during a drought. That's why Boutte Tree's PHC recommendations are tied to seasonal conditions rather than a fixed calendar date.

If you've never had a PHC assessment done on the trees at your property, summer is a useful time, when stress symptoms are visible and there's still a window to intervene before fall. What's one tree on your property that you've been unsure about, whether it's looking a little off or just hasn't seemed right for a season or two? #TreeHealth #AtlantaArborist
