Tree Trimming in Houston: How Proper Pruning in Summer Supports Long-Term Structure and Health

Post Copy

Summer trimming gets a mixed reputation in arboriculture, and with good reason. Pruning during active growth removes some of the canopy a tree is using to produce energy, which creates stress if the cuts are too aggressive or poorly timed. But selective, properly executed trimming during summer is appropriate for specific situations and, in some cases, is the right call even during the hottest months.

Deadwood removal is one of the clearest examples. Dead branches don't contribute to the tree's energy production, and they become progressively more hazardous as they dry out and lose structural integrity. Removing them in summer eliminates a storm risk before peak hurricane season and improves the tree's airflow and light penetration. For live oaks and other Houston-area species that are prone to ball moss and fungal load in dense canopy, selective thinning can also reduce moisture retention in a way that benefits long-term tree health.

Clearance work, removing branches that have grown into contact with structures, power lines, or walkways, is appropriate year-round and can't always wait for the dormant season. Similarly, addressing structural issues identified in a summer assessment, such as rubbing branches or poorly attached co-dominant stems, is better handled before a storm tests the attachment.

Champions Tree Preservation's certified arborists make trimming recommendations based on each tree's specific condition and risk profile, not a standard schedule. If your trees need attention this summer, we can evaluate them and tell you honestly what should be done now versus what can wait. Free estimates available across the greater Houston service area.
