Choosing Tree Species That Actually Hold Up to Houston's Heat, Humidity, and Clay Soil

Post Copy

Not every tree that looks good at the nursery is a good long-term fit for a Houston yard. Our clay-heavy soil, intense summer heat, and swings between drought and heavy rain rule out species that thrive in other parts of the country but struggle here.

Live oaks, bald cypress, and Southern magnolias are proven performers in Greater Houston because they tolerate our soil and climate without constant intervention. Species that need well-drained soil or a true dormant winter often decline within a few years of planting here.

Planting the right species in the right spot from the start saves homeowners years of frustration and the cost of replacing a tree that never should have gone in the ground here in the first place.

What's the most stubborn tree or plant you've tried to grow in your Houston yard?
