Surface watering often doesn't reach where a mature tree actually needs it. Most active roots sit deeper in the soil, and a quick sprinkler cycle wets only the top inch or two while the roots that matter most stay dry underneath.
Deep root watering delivers moisture slowly over an extended period so it soaks in rather than running off or evaporating in summer heat. This matters most for trees planted within the last few years that haven't yet established a wide root system.
Established trees typically tolerate short dry spells well, but an extended stretch of low rainfall, common across Middle Tennessee most summers, can stress even a mature tree if the roots stay dry too long.
