Mulch is one of the most effective and underused tools for protecting trees through summer, and how it is applied matters as much as whether it is applied.
A proper mulch ring, three to four inches deep and extending toward the drip line, does several things at once: retains soil moisture in dry stretches, keeps roots from baking under sun-exposed turf, suppresses grass and weeds, and breaks down to improve soil structure. In established Northern Virginia yards, where compacted soils and summer heat combine, it makes a measurable difference in canopy health.
The most common mistake is piling mulch against the trunk, called "volcano mulching." This traps moisture against the bark, invites disease, and can slowly girdle the tree. Mulch should be flat or sloped away from the base, with a few inches of gap around the trunk.
G&V Tree Service serves Springfield, Fairfax, Alexandria, and throughout Northern Virginia and Maryland. Free estimates are available, from full care plans to a second opinion on a tree that looks off.

Authentic job photo preferred: a properly mulched tree ring on a Northern Virginia residential property, or a side-by-side showing volcano mulching vs. correct application. A crew photo spreading mulch around a large tree works well. Real job documentation outperforms stock for educational posts.
