A tree pushing up a sidewalk slab or creeping toward a foundation puts homeowners and property managers in a tough spot: fix the concrete, or lose a tree that's been there for years. A properly installed root barrier can often solve the problem without doing either.
Root barriers redirect surface roots downward instead of letting them keep spreading laterally toward hardscape. It's most effective installed before major damage occurs, but it can still help slow ongoing movement on established trees when paired with the right pruning approach below ground.
We see this most often on older residential streets and commercial properties where trees were planted decades ago, closer to sidewalks and driveways than modern planting standards would allow today. It's a preventive step worth considering before a small lift becomes a real trip hazard or liability.
Have you noticed a sidewalk, driveway, or walkway on your property starting to lift near a mature tree?
