Aphids and Sooty Mold on Bakersfield Trees This Summer

Post Copy

Aphid populations spike during Kern County's peak summer heat, and the sticky honeydew they leave behind often leads to sooty mold, a black fungal coating on leaves and branches.

The mold blocks sunlight from reaching the leaf surface, cutting into a stressed tree's ability to photosynthesize during the hottest part of the year.

Ants often accompany an aphid problem, protecting the colony in exchange for the honeydew, so an ant trail up a trunk can be an early warning sign.
