Reading Bark to Catch Cytospora Canker on Colorado Blue Spruce Before It Spreads

Post Copy

Colorado blue spruce is one of the most recognized trees in Utah landscapes, and one of the most commonly affected by Cytospora canker, a fungal disease that moves branch by branch from the bottom of the tree upward. By the time most homeowners in Salt Lake City, Sandy, or Draper notice a problem, it has often been active for a season or two.

The bark is where early detection happens. Look for sunken, discolored patches on branches or the main stem, often with a resin bleed seeping from the canopy. Affected lower branches turn brown and die while the upper canopy still looks healthy. That bottom-up pattern is the hallmark of Cytospora.

There's no cure once a branch is infected, but early identification allows targeted pruning before the fungus spreads. Timing matters too: pruning should happen in dry weather to reduce spore spread.

Green Pointe Tree Care specializes in plant healthcare assessments and disease management across the Wasatch Front. If your spruce is losing lower branches, it's worth a professional look before the damage climbs higher.
