Does brass rust? The tarnish question we get asked at the counter more than you'd expect

Post Copy

Short answer: no, brass doesn't rust the way steel does, because rust is specifically an iron oxide reaction and brass contains no iron. But that doesn't mean brass is immune to the elements. Left exposed to air and moisture, brass tarnishes, developing a dull, sometimes greenish patina over time.

That distinction matters when you're choosing material for an outdoor fixture, a marine application, or anything that's going to see regular exposure to humidity here in Georgia. Tarnish is a surface reaction that can often be cleaned or polished away, which is a very different repair story than structural rust damage on steel.

We break down exactly what causes brass tarnish, how to prevent it, and when brass is still the right call despite the exposure, in our latest blog feature. Link in the comments.

Have you ever dealt with tarnished brass on a project, and did polishing bring it back?

Photo comparing polished brass to tarnished brass, ideally from actual inventory at the Marietta location. A visible before/after of the patina makes the concept immediately clear.
