Rebar Grades and Sizing: A Refresher for Anyone Specifying Concrete Reinforcement

Rebar is one of the most familiar materials on a job site and one of the most frequently misspecified when a project moves fast. Size and grade both carry real engineering weight, and getting either one wrong changes the structural performance of the finished pour.

Bar sizes are numbered according to diameter in eighths of an inch, so a #4 bar is a half inch in diameter, and so on up the scale. Grade refers to the steel's yield strength, with Grade 60 serving as the standard for most general construction and higher grades reserved for applications with greater load demands. The right selection depends on the span, the load path, and the specific structural requirements of the pour, not a default habit carried over from the last job.
