A properly installed mulch ring is one of the simplest ways to protect a tree through a hot Upstate SC summer.
Mulch holds soil moisture during dry stretches, moderates root zone temperature, and keeps mowers and trimmers away from the trunk. The key is proper technique: a flat, donut-shaped layer two to three inches deep, pulled back from the trunk itself, not piled high against the bark.
A mulch volcano, piled directly against the trunk, traps moisture against the bark and can invite rot and pest issues rather than preventing them. Mid-summer is still a good time to refresh mulch rings that have thinned out or were installed incorrectly.
