By midsummer, the canopy on a mature tree can be dense enough to create real problems. Heavy, full canopies catch significantly more wind load during storms. They also shade out the lower branches and the grass underneath, and the weight distribution on older trees can put stress on branch unions that are already showing some age.
Selective trimming and canopy thinning reduces that wind resistance without removing the tree's overall structure. Done properly, thinning lets light and air move through the canopy, reduces the mechanical load on the major limbs, and can actually improve the long-term health of a tree by reducing the weight it's carrying through storm season.
This is different from a heavy prune or a reduction cut. Thinning preserves the shape and size of the tree while removing the internal crossing branches and dead wood that are adding weight without adding value. The result is a healthier tree that handles summer weather better.

Ideal shot: a climber working inside a large canopy, a before/after thinning comparison, or an aerial view of a well-shaped tree crown after a trimming job. In-progress action shots of a crew in the tree are especially effective. Authentic job photos strongly preferred over stock.
