Understanding Root Damage: Warning Signs Homeowners in the 757 Often Miss

Post Copy

Most homeowners keep an eye on branches and leaves, but a tree's root system is where a lot of serious problems actually start, and root damage rarely announces itself the way a broken branch does.

Construction work, soil compaction from heavy equipment, and grade changes near the base of a tree can all injure roots without leaving a visible mark for months or even years. By the time a tree starts leaning, losing bark, or showing fungal growth at the base, root damage is often already advanced.

Mushrooms growing near the trunk, soil that is suddenly cracked or heaved near the base, and a canopy thinning unevenly on one side are all worth a professional look. Root issues are one of the harder problems to diagnose without training, and one of the more dangerous to ignore.

If you have had recent construction, grading, or heavy equipment traffic near a mature tree, it is worth having the root zone checked.

Image / Media Suggestion

Authentic job photo preferred: a technician inspecting the base of a tree or root zone, or a photo showing fungal growth or soil heaving near a trunk. Real diagnostic photos from an actual Hampton Roads property are strongly preferred over generic root or fungus stock images.
