Bark beetle activity is rising on heat-stressed Metro Atlanta hardwoods this summer

Post Copy

Peak summer heat weakens a tree's natural defenses, and that is exactly when bark beetles and other boring insects take advantage. A healthy tree can typically produce enough sap to trap and expel these pests, but a heat-stressed hardwood often cannot keep up.

Signs of an active infestation include small round exit holes in the bark, sawdust-like frass collecting at the base of the trunk, and sections of canopy thinning or browning faster than the rest of the tree. These signs often mean the infestation is already established by the time they are visible.

Southern Tree Pros serves Atlanta, Buckhead, Marietta, Roswell, Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, and the surrounding Metro Atlanta area with tree health assessments that catch insect activity early, when treatment and containment options are strongest. Hardwoods that dealt with drought in recent seasons are especially worth a closer look this summer.

A quick assessment now can prevent a small infestation from spreading to neighboring trees on the property.
