Blog: How Much Water Does a Tree Need? Summer watering guidance for Metro Atlanta trees

Post Copy

In the heat of a Georgia summer, watering a tree seems simple: more water when it is hot. In reality, both too little and too much can stress a tree, and the signs can look almost identical from the ground.

Our latest blog breaks down how much water a tree actually needs through the hottest weeks of the year. It comes down to a few things: the species, the age of the tree, the soil it is growing in, and how deep and slow the water goes.

A young or newly planted tree has a small root ball and needs consistent, deep watering to get established. A mature shade tree pulls from a much wider area and usually needs a long, slow soak at the drip line rather than a daily sprinkle near the trunk. Frequent shallow watering trains roots to stay near the surface, which is the last thing you want in an Atlanta drought.

The post also covers the warning signs of both underwatering and overwatering, so you can tell which way your tree is leaning before real damage sets in.

How are you handling watering for the trees on your property through this stretch of heat?
