By mid-July, San Antonio trees are working hard just to hold their moisture. Even established live oaks feel the strain when weeks of high heat stack up with little rain.
The most common watering mistake is going short and frequent. A quick daily sprinkle wets the surface, then evaporates in our heat before it does the roots any good. Deep, infrequent watering is what trees actually use.
For young or newly planted trees, a slow soak at the base once or twice a week reaches down to the roots where it matters. For mature live oaks, watering out near the drip line, not against the trunk, sends moisture where the feeder roots are working. Early morning is the best time to water before the heat climbs.
How are your live oaks looking this month, and have you spotted any early leaf drop or browning?
